About Ankara
The 47th World Othello Championship will take place in Ankara, the capital city of the Republic of Türkiye — the heart of Anatolia, where cultures have blended for centuries.
Throughout history, Ankara has been a significant center of culture, commerce, and the arts. Strategically located at a crossroads on historical trade routes, including the famous Silk Road, the city has long served as a bridge between East and West.
Ankara has been continuously inhabited by a wide range of civilizations, including the Hattians, Hittites, Lydians, Phrygians, Galatians, Greeks, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans. The city is home to various archaeological sites from these eras. One of the most famous historical figures to visit the city was Alexander the Great.
During the Ottoman Empire, Ankara was known for its fine mohair wool produced from Angora goats. Even today, the city is famous for its Angora cats and goats, preserving its unique cultural identity.
Today, as the capital of Türkiye, Ankara is becoming an increasingly popular destination, offering a blend of modern development and rich cultural heritage. Visitors can explore well-preserved historic architecture, enjoy a vibrant arts and culture scene, and experience a wide range of traditional and contemporary Turkish cuisine.
With its numerous museums, bustling streets, green parks, and open recreational spaces, Ankara offers many reasons to be discovered.
